Business and Non-Profit Accounting Class

Saturday, June 16, 2018 - 11:00am to 2:00pm

CLASS ONE (11:00 to 12:15): Intro to Accounting & QuickBooks Desktop Version: The opening of Class One is a user-friendly introduction to accounting and financial statements, with no prior knowledge required.  This is for any business or non-profit folks who want to know more, whether or not you already have computerized accounting (which may mystify you).

The next part of Class One is an introduction to Quickbooks Desktop Version - arguably the best computerized accounting for non-profits, and also for businesses that are product based, and want features not available with QuickBooks Online (e.g. better business setup options, invoicing, inventory tracking, and more).  However, for a small, service-oriented business that needs one or more persons to enter transactions from a mobile device, QuickBooks Online could be better.

The least expensive QuickBooks Online can do very simple business bookkeeping, but for budgeting or project accounting, you’ll need Quickbooks Online Plus at $40/month (plus future increases).  Meanwhile non-profits can buy QuickBooks Premier desktop version once for just $50 (at Techsoup).  Businesses pay a one-time price of about $429, but get a better program, and never pay again (unless you have more than 5 employees and need automated payroll updates).

Instructor Zorah Staar is happy to explain all of the above, and to introduce how the QuickBooks desktop version works.  For the past 20 years, she has done accounting for a dozen small and large non-profits and businesses, including the Heartwood Folk School that she helped found.

CLASS TWO (12:30 to 2:00): Going Further with Quickbooks Desktop Accounting: This class is for business or non-profit organization folks who already have or who may want to buy Quickbooks Premier desktop version (see first class description), and who want to understand or use it more effectively.  This could include: creating more accurate and helpful financial reports; doing project accounting; detailed current and future budgeting; GST rebate accounting; multi-currency accounting; and other questions you may have.

Instructor Zorah Staar has done fairly complex non-profit and business accounting for 20 years (including audited charity accounting and government reporting), and is happy to share what she knows.  This is to help interested Pender businesses and non-profits keep track of their funds and plan for their future, in a sustainable and successful way!
